10 Essential Things to Know Before Exhibiting in Istanbul: The Ultimate Guide for Global Brands
Istanbul is the bridge between Europe and Asia, making it a premier destination for global trade shows. However, the Turkish exhibition landscape has its own set of rules. As Stand Builder Turkey (by Delen Exhibition), we’ve operated in these fairgrounds for over a decade.
Here is what you need to know to ensure a flawless experience at Tüyap or Istanbul Expo Center (IFM).
1. Venue Differences: Tüyap vs. IFM
Istanbul has two main giants. Tüyap Fair Convention and Congress Center is located on the European side’s outskirts, known for its massive halls and heavy machinery exhibitions. Istanbul Expo Center (IFM) is strategically located next to the old airport, making it highly accessible. Knowing which venue you are in changes your logistics and hotel planning entirely.
2. Rigging and Height Restrictions
Unlike some European venues, rigging (hanging signs from the ceiling) is subject to strict structural approvals in Istanbul. Always check the hall’s maximum height. At Stand Builder Turkey, we handle all technical drawings and permit applications for you to avoid last-minute surprises.
3. Power Supply and Electrical Standards
Türkiye uses standard European Type F sockets (230V). However, industrial exhibitions often require 3-phase power. Ensure your stand builder confirms your total kilowatt (kW) requirement with the venue’s technical office at least 3 weeks before the build-up.
4. The Power of “In-House” Production
The biggest risk in Türkiye is working with “middlemen” (brokers). To ensure quality, partner with a contractor that has an in-house workshop. Our 1,500+ sqm facility in Istanbul allows us to pre-build your stand, ensuring every piece fits perfectly before it reaches the fairground.
5. Logistics and Customs (ATA Carnet)
If you are bringing equipment from abroad, an ATA Carnet is highly recommended to bypass complex customs duties. For everything else—from furniture to AV equipment—it is cheaper and faster to source locally through your Turkish partner.
6. “White-Label” Partnership for Agencies
If you are an international design agency, you need a partner who respects your brand. We offer 1,000% white-label execution. Our teams can work under your brand’s identity, ensuring your client receives a seamless experience while we handle the “heavy lifting” behind the scenes.
7. Fire Safety and Material Standards
Turkish fairgrounds have strict fire-retardant requirements for wooden stands and fabrics. Using B1-certified materials is not just a choice; it’s a mandate. We ensure all materials used in our production meet these safety codes.
8. Labor and Union Rules
Good news: Labor laws in Turkish fairgrounds are more flexible than in the US or some parts of Europe. You don’t need to hire venue-specific “union labor” for every small task. However, professional on-site supervision is crucial for a fast and safe installation.
9. Lead Times for Technical Permits
The “Turkish way” can sometimes be last-minute, but the technical offices are not. Rigging, water, and extra electricity requests usually carry a 50% surcharge if ordered in the final week. Plan early to save your budget.
10. Local Expertise is Your Best Asset
Navigating the local bureaucracy and language barrier can be taxing. Working with a company that speaks your language (technically and literally) like Stand Builder Turkey ensures you can focus on your leads while we build your stage.
